  KACHAI LEMON FESTIVAL 2009

The coming of lemon cultivation in Kachai Village is very interesting. The story started about 60 years back. It was first introduced by the late S. Paisho a pioneered Christianity at the Village. He first planted only a few seeds in the village in 1944-45 and only 3 (three) plants started bearing fruit in 1950. This is the beginning of today's Kachai Lemon. The name Kachai Lemon was given by the then Advisor of Agriculture, Govt. of Manipur (L) S. Bhowmik. The ICAR identified the fruit as a kind of rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri). Recently ICAR found that the lemon available in Kachai contains 51% Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) where as it is only about 30% in Orange. So, this is the special quality of this lemon.

OBJECTIVES OF THE FESTIVAL:

1. To promote lemon cultivation in the State.
2.To create a meeting place for buyers and growers.
3. To transfer new technologies to the farmers.
4. To create awareness about the various programmes for development of lemon cultivation.
5. To create a moral boost to the Farmers.

Kachai Lemon festival 2009 was recently held from 15th to 17th Jan. 2009 at Kachai Village of Ukhrul district.
